Automated and controlled processes in comprehending multiple documents

چکیده

The study investigates automated and controlled cognitive processes that occur when university students read multiple documents (MDs). We examined data of 401 dealing with two MD sets in a digital environment. Performance was assessed through several comprehension questions. Recorded log gave indications about students’ time allocation, corroboration, sourcing. Independent measures were used for reading speed to tap the effects automatic processing working memory single-text processing, considered mental capacity performing processing. found faster readers completed tasks showed more corroboration behavior. At same time, skilled allocated likely show MD-specific behaviors Students’ success predicted by memory, effect being mediated comprehension. Behavioral indicators contributed independently predicting Results suggest MDs resembles problem-solving situation where need engage controlled, non-routine build up comprehensive representation benefit from highly automated, lower-level processes.

Bilateral brain processes for comprehending natural language.

Comprehension of natural language--stories, conversations, text--is very simple for those doing the comprehending and very complex for cognitive neuroscientists. It also presents a paradox: the advantage of the left hemisphere (LH) for most language tasks is one of the best-established facts about the brain; yet, when it comes to comprehending complex, natural language, the right hemisphere (RH...

Automated Postediting of Documents

Large amounts of lowto medium-quality English texts are now being produced by machine translation (MT) systems, optical character readers (OCR), and non-native speakers of English. Most of this text must be postedited by hand before it sees the light of day. Improving text quality is tedious work, but its automation has not received much research attention. Anyone who has postedited a technical...

An automated formulation of queues with multiple geometric batch processes

We present an automated formulation mechanism that facilitates the inclusion of batches of geometrically distributed size in Markov modulated, multiprocessor queues of finite or infinite capacity. This provides a practical approach for the analytical modelling of many present day communication and computer systems, e.g. the Internet and mobile networks. Geometric distributions can be scaled and...

The function of epigenetic processes in multiple sclerosis: review article

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological and inflammatory disorder that affects the nervous system. The etiology of MS is unknown, but genetic and environmental factors are involved in its pathogenesis. There is increasing evidence suggesting the role of epigenetic mechanisms in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. Lack of vitamin D, smoking, and Epstein barr virus can cause epigene...

Automated Activity Recognition in Clinical Documents

We describe a first experiment on the identification and extraction of computerinterpretable guideline (CIG) components (activities, actors and consumed artifacts) from clinical documents, based on clinical entity recognition techniques. We rely on MetaMap and the UMLS Metathesaurus to provide lexical information, and study the impact of clinical document syntax and semantics on activity recogn...
